Torre del Mangia in Siena

Siena – the pearl of Italy Siena may just be one of the loveliest cities in Tuscany, if not in all of Italy and has managed to maintain its middle-age charm throughout the centuries. Evenings are spent enjoying a glass of wine in the Piazza amongst a wonderful atmosphere which Siena manages to evoke during 363 days of the year. The famous Palio di Siena wakes the city up from its slumber twice every year.  This Palio, one of the toughest horse races in the world, takes place on the Piazza del Campo and is where the 17 districts (called Contrade) meet to compete against each other. Each district has their own shield, flag, horse and rider. Although this race takes place just two times a year, the preparations seems to run all year long, with anticipation being high in the days before the races, sending a special energy through Siena which every visitor is to sure to feel. The racing days are July 2nd and August 16th and it is no surprise that the Piazza is packed to the brim with intrigued visitors and eager locals. After the race, the entire city is alive with a veritable frenzy of victory and both winners and losers are celebrated until deep into the night with endless song and dance. La vitá é bella!
